What does the Bible say about feelings? Jesus cares about your emotional state. The Bible has many passages that deal with emotions and are able to help you face them and be healed from the hurts of life. Click on the feeling below to bring up lessons we are able to learn from the Bible and the Bible passages which talk about the feeling.
Practical advice on dealing with your emotions
Don't make major decisions when you are under a lot of emotional stress. Take time to deal with the pressing matters. As time passes it will become easier to face the more difficult decisions.
Don't make major decisions when you are physically tired. Your emotions may get in the way of making the best decision.
When praying for God to heal your emotions bring them to the cross that held Jesus. In Isaiah 53:4-6 we read that Jesus took our sorrows on Himself when He died on the cross. "Lord I nail my anger to Your cross" may be a prayer you pray while dealing with the hurts from anger in your life.
Forgiveness is key in a breakthrough with your emotions. Unforgiveness leads to bitterness and gives Satan a foothold in your life. As well unforgiveness leads to health problems. Placing the pain on Jesus releases it from your life. He took our pain when He went to the cross for us. "Lord I forgive Jacob for hurting me when he gossiped about me" is a prayer you may use. Exchange the name and event for the situation you are facing. The Lord will deal justly with the other person. You are responsible for your actions and you are able to forgive the person from hurting you. Without forgiving the person who hurt you will damage your relationship with the Lord. Remember the purpose of Jesus in your life. He is your Saviour and He is able to bring you through times like these. Forgiveness is the key that would allow the relationship to be restored.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you understanding over the situation you are facing. His wisdom and insight will change your perspective on the situation. Understand that at times there is more then meets the eye going on in the person who may have hurt you. Situations in the present trip unfinished issues from the past off. We haven't fully dealt with something until we have been to the cross.
Our emotions are able to warn us that we are in danger.
Pray for your emotions that they won't run your life but that you will be guided by the Holy Spirit. During times of intense pain it is possible that your emotions may have a stronger effect on you then the Holy Spirit. Continue to spend time with the Lord during these times receiving His love and grace for your life. He will endure these times with you.
Responding To Emotions In A Way Which Is Pleasing To The Lord
Abandoned and Overwhelmed:
Jesus knows what it is like to be abandoned. Jesus understands how we feel in these situations. (Matthew 27:46) We are able to overcome feelings of abandonment and being overwhelmed by drawing close to Jesus. (James 4:7-10) The healing and our solid foundation is found in Him because when He died on the cross He bore our sorrows, grief and shame. (Isaiah 53:4-6) As we acknowledge Jesus in our lives He strengthens us to do what we are called to do in life. (Philippians 4:13)
Acceptance And Overcoming Rejection:
We should not reject God given discipline but accept it as God having interest in our lives. Through Godly discipline we are able to be refined into the image of Jesus. (Proverbs 15:5) Accepting yourself as God's child is the key to overcoming rejection. (John 12:47-50) Jesus is your defender. (Proverbs 3:34) Your hope is in the resurrection of Jesus. Your security is found in Him. We don't need to earn God's approval. We are accepted by Him as we are. (Romans 15:7)
Anger:
Anger in itself isn't a sin. (Ephesians 4:26) In our anger we aren't to sin. (Matthew 5:21-22) We are to take time to listen and understand where the other person is coming from. (Proverbs 14:29) When we came to Christ all things were made new in us and the anger we had before knowing Him was nailed to the cross when we said "Yes" to Christ. We began life again when we said "Yes" to Jesus. Selfishness is no longer part of our life because we belong to Christ. The anger that comes from selfishness is no longer ours because we laid down our lives. We now belong to Jesus. He accepts us as we are. (Colossians 3:8-11) We need to examine ourselves in light of God's Word and honestly see if we are angry so that the blood Jesus shed may set us free. As we see things about ourselves that aren't right and don't line up with the Word of God we need to deal with them. It is at times like this that the Holy Spirit is dealing with us, teaching us showing us that we are true Children of God. (James 1:19-24)
Discouragement And Abandonment:
The Lord corrects those He loves. We are His children and He loves us. He is always with us and doesn't forsake us in our troubles. Instead He upholds us and gives us grace to endure. The Lord is our defender and protects those that are His. We are to focus on Him in our times of distress. (Psalm 94:12-23) The Lord God is our security and our safe refuge. When we are found in Him we may experience true joy and peace. He asks us to let Him be first in our lives and out of this relationship the experiences of our life would happen. We are able to come to Him for comfort, counsel and wisdom so He may direct our paths. (Psalm 16:7-11) The Lord is our provider and with Him in charge we may have restful sleep and peace of mind. He carries our anxieties. All we are asked to do is place Him first in our lives. (Matthew 6:31-34)
Fear:
The love and trust of the Lord is how we are able to over come fear. (1 John 4:16-18) Fearing man is a trap of Satan. (Proverbs 29:25) We are to place Jesus first in our lives. God is our refuge and our defender. (Psalm 27:1-3) When we abide in Him we don't need to fear - He protects and guides are steps. (2 Corinthians 5:10-11) By His strength we are able to stand. (Isaiah 41:10) He protects us from our enemies. (Isaiah 35:4) He remains with us at all times. (Psalm 23:4-6) Fear of the Lord causes us to act in righteous ways and is a beautiful thing in His sight. (Psalm 111:10a, Proverbs 31:30)
Guilt and Shame:
It is an honour to suffer shame for the cause of Christ. (Acts 5:40-41) We are to set our minds on Christ and live for Him. When we do this we aren't brought to shame by living for the things of this world. (Philippians 3:17-19) Guilt comes from violating God's moral law and sets us apart from God. (Hosea 10:1-2) Our guilt and shame were taken on Jesus when He died for our sins on Calvary. By His death we are able to be free from these and the bondage of sin. (Isaiah 53:4-6)
Grief And Sorrow:
God's promise of comfort in Jesus was foretold in the prophet Isaiah. He spoke of how Jesus was coming to the earth to bare our grief. Jesus died that He may take our sorrows upon Himself. His glory was His crucifixion that we may live a full and rewarding life in Him. (Isaiah 53:4-6) There are two times of sorrow for the Christian. The first is in times of loss. We are blessed during this times because Jesus comforts us. (Matthew 5:4) The second is during times of correction. Our sorrows cause us to repent and change our ways. (2 Corinthians 7:8-10) Our hope in Christ is that He will never leave us nor forsake us and will see us through times of sorrow. (Matthew 28:19-20)
Loneliness:
God watches over those who are lonely. He leads them into a place of safety and shelter and provides for their needs. In our loneliness we aren't to exalt ourselves over God. (Psalm 68:6) We need to allow Jesus to have His rightful place in our lives. In this way He is able to guide our steps. (Proverbs 10:27-29) Jesus realized the need to rest and be restored. He realized the importance of having quiet time and time alone. In our lives we are able to do the same and have times of refreshing at His feet to be encouraged and rest from the business of life. (Mark 6:30-31)
