1. Work with and trust those you are delegating your work to. Team work goes a long way. If you are going to be able to pass off some of your responsibilities you will need to trust the person you are giving the work to. Perhaps starting a project together and then letting a volunteer or other staff member run with it will let someone know what your vision is and allow the God given results to occur without consuming your time and energy so you may focus on other projects or situations that need your attention.
2. Match the work with a person who has the skills to do what you require of them. Nothing is more frustrating then being asked to do something you aren't gifted to do. God has made each of us unique with different talents and abilities. Match the work you are able to pass on someone with skills the person has. If there is a long term project you are involved with (such as a church expansion) you may be able to mentor someone and they pick up some of your work load freeing up your time in a month or six weeks down the road.
3. Make yourself available for assistance with the work you have delegated out. Even though you have passed the work along to others still make yourself available to answer questions and be of assistance. Let the person know where they are doing a good job. As well help them in areas where they need it or are better needing to understand the purpose and why they are doing a certain task or series of steps.
4. Properly acknowledge your help. Take time to recognise your volunteers. It is a joy to work to work as a team. People will come back to you to be of further assistance to you if they feel encouraged when a project has come to completion. Perhaps a "volunteers recognition evening" should become an annual event in your ministry. Being able to say "Thank-you" may be one of the best gifts you are able to give someone. Another idea may be to recognise your church volunteers in your church bulletin. As people gain confidence they will begin to mentor and be of assistance to others in your congregation.
