When you see Jesus for who He truly is you become challenged to become more like Him and to live each day of your life for Him. In our lives the things that come before God hinder us. They hinder us for seeing Jesus for who He is and experiencing the true love the Lord has for us. The Bible calls these things idols and warns us not to have any idol in our life.
Idols form by us taking control instead of yielding ourselves to the Lord, His will and His desires for us. To identify the idols in your life record the answer to these two questions on a piece of paper:
What comes before God in your life?
What have you made yourself the source of?
The Bible shows us the way of knowing Jesus and living a Christian life. We meet real people who who had an encounter with the Lord and His holiness. Beside each item on the list you have now created find a Bible verse or verses that speaks about it. Use the concordance in your Bible as tool to locate these verses. What you are doing is applying God's Word to your life.
The key to keeping Jesus in His rightful place in your life is to acknowledge that you are a new creation in Him.
Studying through the book of Romans contrasts the life you lived before accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and the life you now live. Even as the Lord tugged at your heart a point exists between the old life style you live and life you are now living where you accepted Jesus as your Lord. That decision to live for Jesus included the forgiveness for the sins you have committed. Being able to acknowledge Jesus as the Lord of your life is the key to growing as a Christian and not allowing idols to come enter your life.
You may be the one who goes to work each day. God is the one who truly gave you the talents you use each day at work and He is the source of your income. The same applies for every area of your life.
You were created in the image of Jesus. As you yield your life to Him it becomes easier and more natural to come to Him and pray "Jesus I need help with ____________________." When you turn to Him for help you will see Him respond to the trust you have placed in Him.
Commit yourself to a daily study of the Bible and prayer both to understand and to apply what you have read to your life.
Be around people who challenge you to be more like Jesus and who care about you enough to share with you areas in your life you need to deal with.
Do not isolate yourself from the body of Christ. Attend the Bible believing church the Lord has placed you in.
Even in a broad sense regularly pray and let Jesus know that He is your source.
As the Holy Spirit leads you grow to become more like Jesus in your life. Be opened that God will show you areas of weakness in your life so you may grow closer to Him.
See Jesus as your source of hope so you will not look for love and encouragement through fleshly methods.
Be willing to forgive those who have hurt you.
